June 1-18

art exhibits, Thunder Bay Art Gallery

Three diverse exhibits from young local artists open at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery: there’s the Secondary School Art Exhibition that showcases art from eight regional high schools; Our Voice, presented by the Fine Arts Academy at Kingsway Public School featuring natural materials and themes and led by two acclaimed artists-in-residence; and Every Picture Tells a Story, a powerful student photo project by Ecole Gron Morgan.

June 3

Thunder Bay Mining Day, Marina Park

Rocks, gold, some big machines: get a hands-on look at one of northwest’s historic industries.

June 3 George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation Soapbox Races, Waverley Hill and Park

Experience the need for speed at the 14th annual soapbox races, as kid racers compete for prizes and take a thrilling ride down Waverley in their custom creations. Food vendors, artists, crafters, buskers will also be on hand for the fun. Watch a video here.

June 4 Kite Festival, Chippewa Park

Colourful dragons, diamonds and birds swooping soaring against a (hopefully) blue sky: the annual Kite Festival is an awesome way to spend an afternoon. Bring your own kite to fly, watch expert fliers demonstrate their skills with huge specialty kites and take in a variety of kids’ activities like paper airplane workshops, bouncy castles, face painting and build-your-own helicopters, pinwheels and hot air balloons.

June 8-10

The Lion King Jr., Redwood Park Church

See Simba, Nala, Zazu and more as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back in a live theatre show by the kids at Vibe Music Performance Academy.

Art in the Park, Rosslyn Library

Explore bugs, butterflies and birds through art and dance in a free outdoor program led by dance and visual artists from the arts program CAHEP.

Grain Days, Baggage Building Arts Centre

If your kids are fascinated by the city’s towering grain elevators, then Friends of Grain Elevators has an event for you. Kids can learn how to load a grain ship, make pasta, play in a flax pool and more.

Anishnawbe Kesshigun, Fort William Historical Park

Watch traditional dance demos, play games like baggataway (lacrosse) and atlatl (spear throwing), make crafts, sample bannock and try your hand at pemmican making, birch bark basket making, wood carving and snowshoe weaving at this annual celebration of indigenous culture.

Monsters & Mayhem, Murillo Fair Grounds

Big, loud and totally over-the-top, smash-em-up fun: the monster trucks are coming! This hugely popular event by Outlaws of Motorsports has monster truck rides, a tuff truck challenge and freestyle motocross featuring X Games gold medalist Heath Frisby.

June 16-17 and June 20-21

All the Daze Productions, various

Fans of Judy Bloom’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing can see the story brought to life by kid actors in this production by All the Daze, held at Confederation College. Then on June 20-21 it’s time for Groovy, a musical comedy tribute to the 60s, held at Magnus Theatre. Cool!

June 17 Border Cats opening home game, Port Arthur Stadium

Take me out to the ball game… the Border Cats face off against the Eau Claire Express in their first home game of the season. (Details are subject to change so doublecheck their site closer to the date.)

Pride in the Park Music Festival, Marina Park

Thunder Bay Pride in the Park events kick off with the parade starting at Waverley Park, then live music and entertainment and children’s activities at Marina Park.

June 21

National Aboriginal Day, Marina Park

National Aboriginal Day’s all-day celebrations begin with a sunrise ceremony, followed by opening ceremonies at 11am and a Pow Wow with a Grand Entry, drumming, craft vendors and feast, a ceremony to honour aboriginal contributions to shaping Canada, and an open-air concert at 8pm.
